Take the Pressure Off with Senior Care
Released Thursday, December 15th, 2011

Summary: There are many responsibilities when caring for an aging parent and sometimes family members cannot be there all of the time. Senior care from Visitingangels.com can provide a respite for families for the times that they cannot be with their loved one.

Many are expected to take care of elderly parents or family members as their parents age and become less independent. It is very difficult, especially considering that most caregivers have their own careers and families to take care of as well. Families are happy to take care of their loved ones; however, it is recommended that there is some type of additional senior care to give respite to families. This is helpful with daily tasks and overnight and out of town needs.

There are a multitude of basic needs, including household maintenance and chores to be tended to when aiding in senior care. Fundamentals such as bathing and grooming, preparing meals, household chores, and paying bills are some examples of what needs to be done for someone. Perhaps some of these can be done by family members, but many times it is too much to handle, and additional caregivers are needed. Services are available to provide help for these basic senior care needs and companionship.

In addition to chores and keeping up with household duties, maybe a challenge is overnight care, or even being responsible for someone who lives out of town. In this day and age, it is common for families to live great distances from each other. If the adult child who is responsible for a senior lives out of town, how will their parent get to a doctor’s appointment, have a companion to check in on them, or take their proper medication? Hired senior care is available, and they offer caring, secure, and trained caregivers. Perhaps a family has coverage during the day, but is unable to spend the night with a loved one, and would feel more secure if their parent had someone in their home overnight. These senior care services are available also.

Visiting Angels provides caring, at-home caregivers offering respite for families, alleviating the stress that they may have. Visitingangels.com has caregivers that can help with hygiene assistance, meal preparation, housekeeping, errands, and much more. They allow the maintenance of a family’s schedule while providing personalized care.

Bio: Grace Enderlein is a freelance writer and editor. “Take the Pressure off With Senior Care” notes that respite care from Visitingangels.com is helpful for a family caring for a loved one in need.

Caregivers Poem
Released Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Do not ask me to remember. Don't try to make me understand.
Let me rest and know you're with me. Kiss my cheek and hold my hand.

I'm confused beyond your concept. I am sad and sick and lost.
All I know is that I need you to be with me at all cost.

Do not lose your patience with me. Do not scold or curse or cry.
I can't help the way I'm acting. Can't be different 'though I try.

Just remember that I need you. That the best of me is gone.
Please don't fail to stand beside me. Love me 'til my life is done!

Fire Safety for Seniors
Released Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

Eighty-two percent of all fire deaths occur in the home. People over the age of 65 are one of the groups at highest risk of dying in a fire. People age 65-75 are twice as likely as the general population, 75-85 are three times as likely, and 85+ are four and one-half times as likely to be killed in a house fire.

Fire Life-Saving Tips
Install a smoke alarm on every level of your home. Test smoke alarm batteries every month & change them at least once a year. Consider installing a 10-year lithium battery powered smoke alarm, which is sealed so it cannot be tampered with or opened. Develop and practice a home fire escape plan. The kitchen is a high danger zone for fire, so be extra cautious when cooking. Remember not to leave food unattended and don't wear loose clothing when cooking. Never use the range or oven to heat the home. Double-check the kitchen to be sure the oven and all small appliances are turned off before going to bed or leaving the house. Don't overload electrical outlets. Always keep dish towels away from all appliances and electrical outlets.

Each year, fire claims the lives of 4,000 people and injures approximately 20,000. Bedrooms are a common area of fire origin. Nearly 600 lives are lost to fires that start in bedrooms. Many of these fires are caused by misuse or poor maintenance of electrical devices, such as overloading extension cords or using portable space heaters too close to combustibles. Many other bedroom fires are caused by children who play with matches and lighters, careless smoking among adults, and arson.

The United States Fire Administration (USFA) and the Sleep Products Safety Council (SPSC) would like you to know that there are simple steps you can take to prevent the loss of life and property resulting from bedroom fires. Bedrooms are the most common room in the home where electrical fires start. Electrical fires are a special concern during winter months which call for more indoor activities and increases in lighting, heating, and appliance use. Do not trap electric cords against walls whereheat can build up. Take extra care when using portable heaters. Keep bedding, clothes, curtains & other combustible items at least three feet away from space heaters. Only use lab-approved electric blankets and warmers. Check to make sure the cords are not frayed.

Other simple steps include
  • Tuck Yourself In For A Safe Sleep
  • Never smoke in bed.
  • Replace mattresses made before the 1973
  • Federal Mattress Flammability Standard.
  • Mattresses made since then are required by law to be safer.
  • Finally, having working smoke alarms dramatically increases your chances of surviving a fire. Place at least one smoke alarm on each level of your home and in halls outside bedrooms. And remember to practice a home escape plan frequently with your family or a neighbor.

Older Adults Are At Risk . . .
Decreased mobility, health, sight, and hearing may limit a person's ability to take the quick action necessary to escape during a fire emergency. Depending on physical limitations, many of the actions an individual can take to protect themselves from the dangers of fire may require help from a caregiver, neighbor, or outside source. If you use a walker or wheelchair, check all exits to be sure they can go through the doorways. Make any necessary accommodations, such as providing exit ramps and widening doorways to facilitate an emergency escape. Unless instructed by the fire department, never use an elevator during a fire. Speak to your family members, building manager, or neighbors about your fire safety plan and practice it with them. Contact your local fire department’s non-emergency line and explain your special needs. The fire department will probably suggest escape plan ideas and may perform a home fire safety inspection and offer suggestions about smoke alarm placement and maintenance. Ask your emergency providers to keep your special needs information on file.

Live near an exit.
Although your have the legal right to live where you choose, you will be safest on the ground floor if you life in an apartment building. If you live in a multi-story home, arrange to sleep on the ground floor, and near an exit. And finally remember that Visiting Angels can provide you with Peace of Mind and perform a free in-home safety assessment at your convenience. The safety and security of seniors is our first concern at Visiting Angels so call today!

National Clean Hands Week
Released Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

Most people know how to wash their hands, but do they do it? The American Society for Microbiology conducted a survey of adults. Ninety-seven percent of the women and ninety-two percent of the men said they always washed their hands after using public restrooms. In reality, only seventy-five percent of the women and only fifty-eight percent of the men were observed doing so.
Poor handwashing practice is a major way cold and other germs are passed from one person to another. The U.S. Center for Disease Control estimates 40 percent of foodborne illness results from poor hand washing practices.
Washing your hands correctly and often is a great simple way to stay healthy.

How to Wash your Hands
Wash hands with soap under warm running water for at least 20 seconds. Wash hands thoroughly, paying special attention to germs that may be trapped under nails and in crevices. Rinse well to remove all traces of soap. Dry hands with a clean towel or paper towel. Allow hands to dry thoroughly after washing and before coming in contact with anything.

When to Wash Your Hands
Before and after:

  • preparing and serving food
  • preparing meat, poultry, and fish
  • feeding an infant
  • eating or drinking
  • changing diapers

After:

  • using the bathroom
  • sneezing, coughing and wiping a runny nose
  • coming into contact with body fluids

Talking to Your Loved One: Tips for Discussing Home Care with Your Loved One
Released Friday, February 4th, 2011
Your loved one must be the focus of all discussions and be totally involved (assuming their mental capabilities are up to the task)

  • Voice your opinions using “I” statements
  • Have a clear topic for every discussion
  • Be assertive about your thoughts
  • Be respectful of others opinions
  • Realize it may take some time and several conversations to come to a consensus
  • Don’t blame others or use “You” statements
  • Don’t try to accomplish too much in one conversation.
  • And, don’t expect that this will be easy.

Keep all discussions with them positive. Treat them as an equal-don’t parent! And remember; let your loved one make their own decisions. Your job is to help them make those decisions, not to make decisions for them.

ICE-In Case of Emergency: ICE your Cell Phone for Peace of Mind!
Released Thursday, January 27th, 2011
The idea is that you store the word “ICE” in your mobile phone address book and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted…”In Case of Emergency”. Additionally, you would want to enter the name of the individual so your display would read: “ICE Heather” indicating the person’s name. In an emergency situation, ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them. Encourage your family, friends and loved ones to make an ICE entry in their cell phone, especially if it will give them piece of mind. Always include written emergency contact and medical information elsewhere as a safety precaution. At this point in time, ICAE is not something universal that paramedics rush to search for. We hope this increased awareness around the world will make it a universal application in the coming years. Tell a friend and help spread the “ICE”.

Talking Points - UV Safety Month
Monday July 26, 2010

Use the talking points as sound bites. These three sentences are the most important messages we have on the issue. Below each sentence are facts to support or clarify the point above.

During July, UV Safety Month, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Eye M.D.s around the country encourage everyone to protect their eyes from UV-related damage.

  • The same UV-A and UV-B rays that can damage your skin can harm your eyes as well. When you protect yourself from the sun, don't just think sunscreen – think sunglasses and a wide brimmed hat.
  • Excessive, prolonged UV exposure may be linked to the development of eye conditions such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.
  • Extensive or intense exposure to UV rays can cause "sunburn" on the surface of your eye. Similar to a skin sunburn, eye surface burns usually disappear within a couple of days, but may lead to further complications later in life so protect your eyes.

To protect your eyes, wear a brimmed hat and the right kind of sunglasses when you are going to be exposed to UV light.

  • Wear sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of UV-A and UV-B rays.
  • If you spend time on the water or in the snow, consider purchasing goggles or sunglasses that wrap around your temples because they block the sun’s rays from entering on the sides, offering better protection.
  • Remember sunglasses don't have to be expensive to offer the right kind of UV protection. Even inexpensive glasses can protect your eyes if they offer 99 to 100 percent UV-A and UV-B protection.
  • Don't forget the kids. Protect their eyes with hats and sunglasses. In addition, try to keep children out of the sun between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. when the sun's ultraviolet rays are the strongest.

It's important to protect your eyes when UV light is most intense.

  • Generally, UV light is at the greatest level at midday (10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.), but you need to protect your eyes whenever you're outside for a prolonged period, even when it's gray and overcast.
  • Reflected sunlight off water, snow and pavement can be the most dangerous type of UV light because it is intensified.
  • Your eyes can be harmed by UV light sources other than the sun, such as welding lamps or tanning lights. So remember to wear eye protection when using these sources of invisible, high energy UV rays.

Social Wellness Month: July
Monday July 19, 2010

Social Wellness Month is historically celebrated during the month of July. Social Wellness Month was created / sponsored by Words of Wellness and was put in place to assist people in their efforts to live a healthier life. Social Wellness Month offers an excellent opportunity to help others feel good about themselves and build stronger social ties to the ones that you love

We would like to join you in celebrating July as Social Wellness Month and encourage you to work to become a better, healthier person.

Hemochromatosis Awareness Month

July is National Hemochromatosis Awareness Month, and since most parents, and many pediatricians, don't know about any of the signs, symptoms, or problems associated with hemochromatosis, it is a great time for everyone to learn more about it. Hemochromatos (http://pediatrics.about.com/od/diseasesandconditions/a/hemochromatosis.htm) is a genetic disease that can be inherited from a child's parents, and which causes the child to absorb too much iron, leading to extra iron being stored in the child's liver, heart, pancreas, and other organs. And although this usually doesn't cause any symptoms in childhood, later in life it can cause them to have arthritis, heart problems, liver disease, diabetes, and many other medical problems. Learn if your child is at risk for hemochromatosis (http://pediatrics.about.com/od/diseasesandconditions/a/hemochromatosis_2.htm), especially if any adult family members, including parents, aunts, and uncles, have already been diagnosed with hemochromatosis.

Did You Know... We Are Proactive
June 7th, 2010

You won't get "lost in the shuffle" with us. Some agencies simply react to calls from clients rather than anticipating your needs in advance. We begin by reviewing your needs through discussions with family members and when necessary, with healthcare providers. Our service coordinator carefully selects the caregiver with the necessary experience and personality that is best suited to the need each client. Next, we arrange for the caregiver to visit your home so that you can participate in the selection process. After services begin, we implement our system of ongoing personalized contacts with your family to insure that the care recipient is receiving the best possible care.
